Unfortunately,
too many Hong Kong babies are not fed this natural and
normal way, but they are bottle fed instead. Widespread
distribution of artificial formula advertisements and
free formula samples given out to the public make parents
choose formula milk over human milk. In fact, Hong Kong
has a very low breastfeeding rate compared to most modern
cities in the world. While the World Health Organization
recommends that mothers breastfeed for at least six
months, and continue for up to two years or more, many
Hong Kong parents don't follow this recommendation,
even though it is babies' healthiest start.
In
2001, there were only 51% of mothers who continued to
breastfeed their babies when they discharged from the
hospital (SCMP, 14 Jan 02), and few of these continue
for even one month. Luckily, breastfeeding is gradually
coming back into normal practice use. We would like
to introduce its benefits of breastfeeding to you, so
that you have a general impression of breastfeeding,
in order to make a wise decision in future.
