General Information

The MPhil-PhD Programme Study Scheme
Programme Structure
The MPhil and PhD are regarded as two streams within the MPhil-PhD Programme.

Each student in the MPhil-PhD Programme will at any one time be classified into one
of the following three categories:
(a) MPhil student;
(b) PhD student (pre-candidacy); or
(c) PhD student (post-candidacy), or PhD candidate for short.

Students will be offered admission as either an MPhil student or a PhD student (precandidacy).

Transfer between MPhil and PhD (pre-candidacy) is permitted subject to approval by the Division. Students should complete relevant application form and submit it to the supervisor and Division Head for consideration. Upon approval, the Division would report such transfers to the Graduate School immediately. Transfer from the PhD (post-candidacy) stage to MPhil status will not normally be permitted; unless otherwise approved by the Graduate Council.  The flow-chart below is a summary of our MPhil-PhD Programme.

* The minimum requirement for graduation.
A PhD student must have at least one publication in B grade journal (within 30% of one journal subject category) for graduation.

Candidacy Examination
PhD students are required to:

(a) take a candidacy examination by the end of the first 18 months from the first entry (for full-time student). If students fail in the first attempt, a second attempt is allowed, but it must be taken before the end of the second year from the first entry.  If the students fail in the second attempt, they are not allowed to be promoted to the post-candidacy programme and required to graduate at MPhil level.

(b) pass a written examination in the candidacy examination or, subject to Division’s approval, use two 5000-level courses at grade B- or above as a substitute.

(c) pass an oral examination on research plan in the candidacy examination.

(d) pass four 3-unit courses before sitting for candidacy examination.

For PhD students who have already fulfilled the candidacy requirements, the PGS-2 rate will be effective in the month following the notification of the result.

Other Requirements (Applicable to all students)
Students are required to attend at least 4 departmental seminars / term.

All students are required to pass the Information Technology (IT) Proficiency Test before they graduate.

A student shall be required to discontinue his/her studies if
a) the cumulative average of the GPA of courses taken is 1.0 or below, or
b) there are failure grades (grade D or below) in two courses or more.

Therefore in the first term, Year 1 students should gain grade ‘C-’ or above in the elective courses since the seminar would not be graded until the end of the second term.
