Based
on the request from teachers attending the "Separation of DNA by electrophoresis"
workshop organized by the Centre for Promoting Science Education of the
Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003, the Department of Biochemistry
will supply the apparatus and reagents for conducting the DNA electrophoresis
experiment in secondary schools.

This
kit offers a series of activities to learn the principles of electrophoresis.
After learning the basic technique, teachers/students progress to
using agarose gel electrophoresis to separate mixtures of molecules.
The
Gel Electrophoresis Unit is a home made plastic tank with cables
but without power supply. Remember that a power supply that can
deliver at least 40V (better performance can be obtained if the
voltage is between 60-100V) is necessary for the DNA electrophoresis
experiment.
