RasMol

RasMol is an important scientific tool for visualization of molecules created by Roger Sayle in 1992. It is a molecular graphics program intended for the visualization of macromolecules like proteins, nucleic acids and small molecules and to prepare publication-quality images. Rasmol is a free software which can be downloaded from its website. It runs on Windows or Macintosh/PC computers. A free Protein Data Bank file (.pdb file) can be downloaded for each molecule you wish to view. It is very easy to rotate a protein or DNA molecule and show its three-dimensional structure.  The detailed using instructions will be explained step- by- step in the following.

1. Installing RasMol for Windows

2. How to start up RasMol

3. Using RasMol to look at:

   small organic molecule

   Nucleotide

   Base- pairing in DNA

   DNA double helix

   Amino Acid

   Structure of proteins

   Human amylase

   A DNA binding protein

4. Getting the PDB files from the Internet
